What Happens When City Services Break Down? Do-It-Yourselfers Arise PDF Print E-mail

The government of the city of Detroit is in financial ruins. Tearing down decayed houses is Detroit's new growth industry, but the city can't maintain the vacant lots.

However, a few local residents have decided that their fate is in their own hands, and their neighborhoods will be nice as they can make them. On their own time and their own dime, citizens like Eddie Edwards and Howard King Jr., two sixty-something quiet "revolutionaries", have stepped in to make up for the failure of government -- not by complaining to city council, but by doing the work themselves.

I interviewed these men on the phone, and then did a segment of my weekly internet TV show on this topic. You can hear the interviews and link to the video and Wall Street Journal article at my website.

BTW, I got the idea for the show from LCRC Chair Wayne Woodman who sent me the WSJ link. Do you see any applications of this idea for Allentown, Bethlehem, Catasauqua or your town?
